Community called to step up for Zoo Lake in Parkview

PARKVIEW – The Zoo Lake Users Committee has encouraged residents to be a part of their initiative aimed at beautifying and securing the Zoo Lake premises.

A bold initiative, aimed at beautifying and enhancing the impact of the Zoo Lake premises in Parkview is underway.

Fran Haslam, chairperson of the Zoo Lake Users Committee which is steering the initiative, together with community authorities, has encouraged the community to step up in support of the project.

Residents are invited to attend the Erosion Action Day on November 25, from 09:00 to 14:00, and encouraged to support the day through various means.

Haslam explained the aim of the erosion project, “We are planning to rehabilitate the south-east side of the lake, which is approximately 444m². This is the last major upgrade of our erosion project. We are fortunate to have the expertise of Maccaferri and SRK Engineering and Cre8ive Construct. Their knowledge and expertise have helped us with the engineering and technical side of the rehabilitation. They have also very kindly offered to donate their time and some supplies for the day.”

She explained that due to the size of the area, they would split the area into three. “On November 25, we will focus on the packing of the gabion baskets and working on Phase 1. We will then arrange a further two action days in January 2022 and February 2022 to finish off the area.”

She said that assistance and donations were needed with the following:

The Zoo Lake Users Committee works closely with Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo and relies on the time and experience of volunteers (largely comprised of residents from the surrounding suburbs). The committee’s vision for the year has incorporated four distinct components – an erosion project, a fencing project, a playpark, and waste management.
