Music comes alive at Parktown children’s workshop

PARKTOWN – Top-quality children's theatre workshops are held at the National Children's Theatre in Parktown on Saturdays.

Music extraordinaire Christine Ludwig shares her theatrical expertise with visitors to the children’s workshops at the National Children’s Theatre in Parktown on Saturday mornings.

Ludwig said her work on musical productions at the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls had introduced her to the team from the National Children’s Theatre. She was invited to help with the music and singing at the theatre’s Saturday workshops and has never looked back.

The talented performer has been in the music industry for 20 years, having started with classical singing lessons at the age of 12. Her repertoire includes pop and jazz music, as well as classical arias. She has worked with individuals and choirs, and on television and theatre productions. She has also worked as voice coach for various reality productions, such as Clash of the Choirs SA, Idols, The Voice South Africa, The Voice Nigeria, The Sing Off SA and Big Brother Africa: Hot Shots.

She has also worked on the new show, Stand Up South Africa, now airing on SABC2, and has worked with the internationally-renowned cast of Africa Umoja, and several other productions as musical director. One of her most memorable experiences was as choirmaster in kykNET’s television choral competition Sing in Harmonie. “Together with the Southdowns College choir we won the awards: episode champions and best newcomers.”

She said the workshops at the National Children’s Theatre were held from 09:00 to 12:00 on Saturdays, for children between seven and 17 years. The disciplines of drama, dance, physical theatre, and music/singing are included. “Children learn to interact with others. They learn patience, tolerance and kindness. They learn to work as a team and they learn to value their unique contribution to that team.”

Ludwig concluded that one of her greatest experiences doing the workshops included coming back to the theatre after lockdown in 2020. “We did offer online classes but these simply cannot compare to live sessions. We moved our classes outside, found a space on the lawn and sang and moved to our hearts’ content. It was incredibly liberating for all of us.”
