Keep your pets safe during the Diwali fireworks
SANDTON – While this is a beautiful traditional celebration, residents must also keep their furry friends in mind.
Diwali, also known as the festival of lights, will fall on November 4 this year.
While residents may only make use of fireworks for special occasions, Diwali included, the City of Johannesburg by-laws state that these fireworks may only be used between 19:00 and 22:00.
While this is a beautiful traditional celebration, residents must also keep their furry friends in mind.
According to the Sandton SPCA, cats and dogs are able to hear a wider range of sounds, and softer sounds, than humans.
Loud fireworks are terrifying for many of these animals.
The Sandton SPCA shares a few tips to keep your pets safe during fireworks:
- Ensure that your pets are indoors during fireworks displays. An inside room with high windows is advisable to prevent pets from bolting and jumping through windows.
- Keep the doors, windows and blinds/curtains in the room closed as animals are also scared by the flashing lights.
- Use a radio or television to play soothing music for the duration of the display; this will help to mask the noise.
- If you know your animal is petrified by fireworks, purchase calming medication from your local veterinarian beforehand.
- If at all possible, stay at home with your pets as your presence alone will have a calming and soothing effect.
- Keep them occupied – chew treats or treat toys can help distract pets during the display.
- Give your pets plenty of tender loving care and reassurance.
