Atholl resident Firdoze Bulbulia to co-host upcoming Artizen conference

ATHOLL – Atholl resident Firdoze Bulbulia is co-hosts the upcoming international Artizen conference, which focuses on art as a vehicle for social transformation.

Artizen, an international conference on art for social transformation, will be hosted from November 5 to 8.

Atholl resident Firdoze Bulbulia will co-host the conference, which she explained would follow a hybrid model (both in-person and online). She said, “Artists and the arts community have really suffered during the pandemic, and many have not managed to work. However, now that the country is opening up again, people are realising the importance of the arts in helping us to remember our identity as South Africans.”

Bulbulia’s company Moments Entertainment is now 27 years old and with a focus on film, media and theatre production, she said the partnership with the Artizen initiative was a perfect fit.

“This year’s Artizen will explore, among other things, various political narratives of South African women, including Mama Winnie Mandela, Fatima Meer, Amina Cachalia and Pricilla Jana. There will also be a celebration of South African music, with a focus on performers such as Yvonne Chaka Chaka, Sipho Hotstix Mabuse, and Pops Mohamed.”

Other initiatives, such as Amajika, a youth project hosted by musician Tu Nokwe, which uses art therapy for young children and produces children’s theatre, will also be celebrated.

“Art holds up a mirror to society and has the ability to bring people together,” said Bulbulia.

“It is also a vehicle for social cohesion and transformation, with its transformative ability experienced every day, such as through the music we listen to, which heals the soul. Issues of mental health, and physical and psychological exhaustion have been compounded by Covid-19, and one of the remedies for this is art, which reawakens our hearts to remember who we were – and still are.”

As part of her contribution towards the arts, she has produced and directed #memoryisaweapon which has the purpose of awakening South Africans to their identity and destiny. This can be viewed at the Artizen conference.
