Central Gauteng Lions launch KFC Mini-Cricket 2021-22 season with a bang

CORLETT – KFC Mini-Cricket is the largest grassroots development sports programme in South Africa.

South Africa’s leading cricket development programme, KFC Mini-Cricket, held its annual provincial seminar at Wanderers Cricket Stadium on October 14.

The programme provides children in local communities with the opportunity to get active and have fun. It is the largest grassroots sports programme in South Africa and is an essential part of learning the basics of cricket and instilling a love for the game.

According to KFC CSI manager Andra Ferreira Nel, since the inception of the programme in 2010, more than 2.5 million children have participated and more than 120 players have gone on to play for South Africa in various teams.

The programme plays a crucial role in Cricket South Africa’s development framework as more than 2 000 players have been identified and have been directed to their respective Development Hubs and Regional Performance Centres.

Gauteng Cricket Union hosted the seminar, and each year it brings together all volunteers, administrators, and key stakeholders to plan for the season ahead and reflect on the previous season’s successes and challenges.

Nel said, “This year is a momentous occasion for us as we [KFC] turn 50 in South Africa. That is 50 years of spreading ‘finger-lickin’ goodness’. There is no better way to celebrate our milestone than by recognising our phenomenal volunteer coaches and coordinators.”

The theme of this year’s KFC Mini-Cricket festival is Imvuselelo, which means ‘recovery’, as South Africa continues to recover and rebuild from the devastating impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.

“We are very excited to have the 2021-22 KFC Mini-Cricket season get underway as we will get children across different communities active. However, we are still aware that the pandemic has not ended, and safety will still be a priority with all protocols still having to be observed in the upcoming seminars and festivals.”
