Deutsche International Schule Johannesburg unveils artwork for heritage day

PARKTOWN – The artwork was painted by the entire school community from learners to the School administration.

One of the oldest schools in Johannesburg, Deutsche Internationale Schule Johannesburg, recently unveiled a 11m by 12m heritage artwork.

The artwork was unveiled on October 6 at the school’s main entrance. Learners, from the youngest ones to the Grade 12s, as well as the school’s maintenance team, cleaners, and administration staff painted the piece.

According to Annette Holtmann, marketing executive at the school, many hours of creativity, fun, laughter, teamwork, and hard work went into painting the unique artwork.

“Classes, from kindergarten to Grade 12 and all our administration departments, took part in this Heritage Day project and they could decide on their own designs, that most reflect their idea of heritage,” Holtmann said.

She added the artwork was painted as part of the school’s Heritage Day celebrations as they did not celebrate the day on September 24 due to school holidays.

“What a special way to celebrate all our diverse heritages and cultures at the school. We like to thank all the learners, teachers, and staff, and especially Monika Springer, a Grade 6 teacher who came up with this wonderful idea, as well as Jennifer Wilkins, who assisted with the sewing together of all the different artworks.”
