Practice safety measures to avoid hijackings

GLENHAZEL – A recent hijacking in the Glenhazel area has prompted security officials to provide residents with safety tips.

A recent hijacking in the Glenhazel area has prompted CAP Security officials to provide safety tips to residents.
Two men were arrested by security officials following the incident. CAP Security communications specialist Elyse Golovey believes staying mindful of one’s safety is imperative in the fight against crime.

She has provided the following safety tips to residents, to avoid becoming the victim of a hijacking:

  • Before approaching your home or parking off somewhere, check who is in the immediate surroundings. Is there a vehicle you do not recognise near you? Are there individuals standing around nearby? Has a vehicle been following you? Take note of suspicious activity. If you see two or more individuals on foot or in a vehicle, don’t pull into your driveway.
  • To be hijacked, your car has to be stationary. This means that when you are waiting at a stop street or at an intersection, you need to be alert and aware of any individuals who are nearby. Leave a good-sized gap between your vehicle and the one in front of you for an easy getaway.
  • Avoid parking your vehicle in deserted public spaces. If this is something that cannot be avoided, try and park your vehicle in a well-lit, busy area. Double-check the area before exiting and entering your vehicle.
