Encouraging innovation in the youth

HOUGHTON – Ort SA staff members recently stepped up in support of youth empowerment through supporting learners from the Curtis Nkondo School of Specialization.

Staff from Ort SA in Houghton recently joined learners from the Curtis Nkondo School of Specialisation (Soweto) in an excursion to the River Park Clinic in Alexandra, where they learned about the amazing world of medical technology.

This excursion formed part of the Young Entrepreneurship Programme, orchestrated by Ort SA.

The excited learners, who are programme beneficiaries, were given the opportunity to learn about a self-service health station called ‘Abby’, developed by Abby Health Stations. This was to give them inspiration for a system they are currently working on as programme beneficiaries for the upcoming final competition, which will be held on October 20 this year.

Programme beneficiary and learner Koketso Motsa explained that her team was working on an intelligent health system that would take the vital readings of patients.

She said she had been enlightened by the many types of technology the learners observed. She thanked Ort SA, the clinic, and Abby Health Stations, for giving her and her fellow beneficiaries guidance and inspiration.

Co-founder of Abby Health Stations Josh Lasker said, “It was great to see the kids so excited and so passionate about building something better for the future of South Africa, and I honestly wish them all the best.”

Ort SA marketing intern Milani Falitenjwa explained the vision behind the Young Entrepreneurship Programme, “For any plant to grow from the ground, one needs to plant the seed. The same analogy applies to youth development. This needs to start at grassroots level for anyone to see real growth.”
