Be brave and run for a cause

MIDRAND – Be a game changer in your neighbourhood this October 15 by putting on your speedo and raising awareness about men's cancers.

The Hollard Daredevil Run is back.

Be a part of the movement this October 15 and join other brave men to fight stereotypes and raise awareness of men’s cancer.

Leah Callipolitis, head of public relations at Creative Space Media, said the run has been a highlight on the South African social calendar since 2009.

Callipolitis said South Africa’s ‘ballsiest’ 5km run was the brainchild of Hollard who wanted a platform that raises eyebrows while raising awareness of prostate and testicular cancer, and the message that early detection saves lives.

“This ‘run-not-a-race’ encourages men of all ages, shapes, and sizes to run five kilometres in their neighbourhoods to drive awareness of the scourge of male cancers in South Africa. The act of stripping down to nothing but a purple speedo is not only challenging for runners (and for some onlookers!) but also challenges stereotypes about male cancers,” she added.

Callipolitis added that all these efforts were in the interest of starting conversations about understanding and lowering the risk of cancer, encouraging early testing for prostate cancer, and self-examination for testicular cancer. Usually, a mass-participation event is held in Johannesburg, but this year, it is a once-off Covid-edition national event that will see runners from anywhere in the country participating from the comfort of their neighbourhoods by running alone, with a friend, or in a small group of a maximum of five runners.

“The Hollard Daredevil Run is taking place at any time on 15 October. Just map your own 5km route. Entries close on October 8. Entries cost R 160.00 with all proceeds going to Cansa and the Prostate Cancer Foundation of South Africa. Friends, family, and neighbours can also sponsor runners and raise funds towards this important cause,” Callipolitis concluded.
