Old Eds holds virtual race in support of charity

HOUGHTON – A virtual race was recently officiated by the Old Edwardian Athletics Club in Houghton.

On August 7 and 8, runners took to the roads to participate in the Old Eds Virtual Road Race.

This was the first leg of the Johannesburg Virtual Vitality Run Series. This was the first time The Old Edwardian Athletics Club hosted a Covid-19 Compliant Virtual Race after hosting road races for 40 consecutive years before the pandemic.

The main attraction of the event was that runners could run anywhere and would receive 600 Vitality points for running either a 5km, 10km, or 21.1km race. Runners were allocated points after uploading their runs to Strava as proof.

It wasn’t just runners who benefited from the event. Various charities were supported through participants’ contributions. These charities included Sandton SPCA (R20 151 raised), Hospice Wits (R8 626 raised) and Ort SA (R 4 972 raised). Race proceeds will also go a long way to support the club financially, as no race could be held last year due to Covid-19.

The club’s chairperson, James Webster, said, “We would like to thank the entrants for their support and those who donated to our chosen charities.”
He further thanked the club’s commercial partner Discovery Vitality for promoting the event to the company’s subscribers.
