St John’s College U15 basketball team wins tournament

HOUGHTON – St John's College U15 team wins league on home ground.

St John’s College is the champion of the U15 category of the 2021 St John’s College Basketball tournament.

The final day of the tournament, held at St John’s College on September 5, comprised of knockout rounds. The St John’s College U15 team managed an emphatic 40–29 win over Soweto Academy in the kick-off game of the semi-finals.

On the day, the U15 team also claimed a 42–39 win against St Stithians College, making them the champions of the U15 league.

Coach of the team, David Onyejieke said the tournament was exciting, especially after a while of sports games not taking place.

Onyejieke expressed how proud he was after seeing so many doubt how far the U15 team would go. “The boys were totally committed to our team goal from the start. They sacrificed their August holiday for many, many hours of court practice, and forged ahead during the tournament making their mark on each game that they played,” he said.

“My ultimate goal as a coach has always been to emphasise the importance of good teamwork, and it paid off! I thank God that during this challenging year for sports, I was able to share in the victory with my team. I also thank my assistant coach Taboko Phogole for his hard work and commitment.”
