Rugby takes a leaf from the soccer book

Voting is free of charge and voting lines close on October 18.

The recently ended Carling Currie Cup has taken a leaf from the book of the Premier Soccer League to advance a competition similar to soccer’s off-season Carling Black Label Champions Cup.

The soccer competition pits the Soweto football giants Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates in a mouthwatering
off-season Soweto derby whose players and coaches are already voted for and chosen by the fans of the two clubs through an intricate voting system.

Now the brand wants to bring a similar voting pattern into the world of rugby, following the conclusion of a hilarious Currie Cup season, which has again been won by the Vodacom Blue Bulls.

In just one year on from taking over the Currie Cup sponsorship, the Carling Black Label beer brand is already set to introduce a competition for rugby running along the same lines of its football competition.

Building on this season’s momentum, the brand has mooted an offering to rugby fans to select players to form a team to take to the field in a historic Champions Match against a soon-to-be-revealed opposition on November 6.

Players from all seven of the unions campaigning in the Currie Cup Premier Division – the Bulls, Cell C Sharks, Sigma Lions, DHL Western Province, Toyota Cheetahs, Tafel Lager Griquas, and New Nation Pumas – are eligible for selection.

Sporting fans have been urged to brace themselves for an exciting team of fan favourites to battle in a showcase of exhilarating rugby.

Voting is as simple as a conversion in front of the posts. There are a number of ways to get in on the action. Dial 120*660* followed by the unique code on the packaging and #. This is completely free of charge from any Vodacom phone and costs 20c for 20 seconds on any other network. Fans should follow the Carling Black Label social media channels for further opportunities to vote.

Alternatively, fans can scan the QR codes on promotional beer brand cans and bottles or simply visit carlingcurriecup.com, or get selections in via Facebook Messenger. Fans have until October 18 to register their votes, before the big kit showcase and Champion Team announcement.
