Planting trees to save more trees

DUNKELD WEST – Friends of Hugh Wyndham Park Committee with the support of the Craigpark Residents Association plant trees to celebrate Arbor Day and to reduce the number of dying trees.

Friends of Hugh Wyndham Park Committee join hands with the Craigpark Residents Association to plant trees for Arbor Day. The tree-planting ceremony took place on September 12 at the Hugh Wyndham Park where 15 indigenous trees were planted.

“Every year we lose trees in the park for many reasons, but mostly drought and disease. The park is ran by volunteers from the community and trees do get the nurturing like those in gardens. We are also contending with major infestations by the shot-hole borer beetle. At least 11 trees have died as a result of this infestation,” said head of marketing of the Friends of Hugh Wyndham Park Committee Suzanne Poorter.

A total of 30 trees were received in donation and these will be planted in the coming weeks. The initiative also received monetary donations from donors which will be spent towards purchasing more trees, buying compost and labour to plant. Additionally, the organisations will be removing dead trees and pruning some under Julian Ortlepp from Tree Works’ guidance.
