Delta Park gets a facelift

DELTA PARK – Community members put their spades together to clean up Delta Park.

Residents put their hands together to care for Delta Park.

A group of residents, who usually visit Delta Park, took the initiative to clean up the river area in the park. Among the group of volunteers was Janine Gunner. She said the motivator for her was seeing the state in which the river was and the importance of nurturing wildlife and nature in our city.

“I was on my way to an appointment when I noticed some birds in the road risking their lives to drink water from a pothole and I realised how important green spaces are for the wildlife and also for our city.

“Then I looked at the next park I drove past and saw there were broken bottles and other litter and I thought it could be dangerous for small children like my niece and nephew.”

Marina Simanina is a new resident of Craighall Park who usually cycles and takes walks at the park with her husband. While on one of their walks, her husband mentioned that it would be great to clean the litter from the river. Within several days the two friends decided to work together and take initiative to clean up Randburg rivers.

“I didn’t think long and proposed to do a first clean-up in Delta Park,” said Simamina.
“Janine was happy to support this idea. We set up a date, place, we created a promo and wrote an invitation, coordinated the action with our team of volunteers. Then we spread the word on Facebook and WhatsApp among our friends and colleagues. The preparation took a week,”

The clean-up took place on September 4 where a group of 25 attendees cleaned up litter from Delta Park Café along the river and around the blue bridge of Delta Park.

The group told the Rosebank Killarney Gazette that they are collectively inspired by The Way to Happiness book, written by L. Ron Hubbard, which provides 21 precepts based on common sense to better living. The group is planning another clean-up which will be held in six weeks in Bromhof Wetlands Park.
