Charity begins with you

ROSEBANK – The Rotary Club of Rosebank's donation nurtures lives.

The Rotary Club of Rosebank’s donation continues to makes a difference in the lives of many.

The club donated a water tank to assist non-profit organisation Charity Begins With Me in April this year to provide running water for their vegetable garden, as reported in the Rosebank Killarney Gazette online article Rotary Club of Rosebank lends a helping hand to charity published on May 12.

The charity feeds approximately 950 children once a week. While the organisation has water tanks with water supplied by the municipality, these are primarily used for drinking and other uses and did not include watering the vegetable garden.

The tank has since assisted the organisation to water their vegetables which are then sold to make an income. The women sell their crops at about R7 a bunch which puts bread on the table for their families. Founder of Charity Begins With Me Stephan Ferreira said, “The JoJo tank has made a huge difference as it provides a water source closer to the garden. Before, the ladies would have to walk many kilometres to get water. It hasn’t been easy but the garden is expanding and growing day by day. We are always so grateful to Rotary and the amazing work they do.”

The club was glad that the new tank has been making a very big difference. Rosebank Rotary Club’s head of the community services committee Sybillie Essman said, “This is a project we are proud to be associated with, because Rotary is passionate to support sustainable and measurable community projects, and this is a testament to this community’s wish to not only be dependent on handouts but to be the masters of their own destinies.”
