Norwood CPF member goes over his jurisdiction to help those in need

NORWOOD – Norwood CPF member takes matters into his hands through a blanket drive.

Norwood Community Policing Forum member and responder goes over and above to care for those in need.

Evan Milner, a Norwood CPF patroller and responder, started a blanket drive for the less fortunate in the Norwood area due to the freezing temperatures these past few weeks. Milner started sending messages to different community groups requesting for blanket donations on July 15.

“I have been serving the community in some form or the other for a very long time, the blankets just seemed to be the thing needed,” said Milner.

The blanket drive got onto a good start when Milner was contacted by Yaseen Theba from Vision Tactical Security, who donated four bales of blankets, which totalled to 100 blankets. Thirty blankets were donated to Twilight Children Centre, a youth innovation hub in Hillbrow where they were distributed to the inner city community families between July 18 and 20. A friend of Milner’s, Doris Pollack, knitted jerseys for children and she also knitted blankets.

After the bales were donated to the two charities in Hillbrow, Milner was left with 40 odd blankets which he thought to donate to employees around the area. “My nanny, who lives on our property, made a comment about how cold she was in her room, so I sorted her out and then it got me thinking. What about employees who at night go home to a cold, unheated house because things are so tough,” he said.

Milner contacted an owner of the Ready To Go restaurant in Norwood and asked if it would be okay to donate to his staff, and donated 40 blankets. Milner received another batch of blankets and the batch was donated to help the people who had lost all their belongings in a shack fire last week in the Johannesburg CBD.

People who are interested in donating towards this initiative can email Evan Milner through his Orange Grove Concerned Citizens Residents Association email ogccreg4@gmail.com .
