Parktown Girls relieved to resume in-person learning

PARKVIEW – Megom said that all Covid-19 protocols remain in place at the school.

Headmistress at Parktown High School for Girls Tracey Megom said there was a general sense of relief that the return to school was not further disrupted on July 26.

Megom said, “The winter break came at the right time as both learners and staff have worked incredibly hard this year and under very difficult and stressful circumstances.

“Even though the challenges of Covid are far from over, our girls have adapted well to these challenging times and both learners and staff are happy and excited to be back to the school routine.

“We do feel that it is so important for learners to be at school, interacting [at a distance] with their teachers and their peers rather than trying to navigate important concepts online.”

Megom added that all Covid-19 protocols remained in place at the school and 93% of staff would soon be vaccinated, creating a safer environment for all.

Grade 9 learner Titselo Dlamini said, “It is a relief to be back at school and into the swing of things. It is so much better than being at home and doing nothing.”

Another Grade 9 learner, Jehan Elmedany, said, “I am so grateful to be back at school and able to see my friends.”

Megom said the school extended their condolences to any members of the school and extended community who have lost loved ones or livelihoods during the pandemic.

“In addition to Covid, the events that have played out over the past few weeks have been devastating and we cannot underestimate the effect this is going to have on our learners [immediately and in the medium to long-term] in terms of education, economic stability and mental health.

“As adults in society, we have to find a ways to create hope and opportunities for our young people, and as a school, Parktown High School for Girls will, as always, strive to be a place of safety, a place of enjoyment and a place of hope,” concluded Megom.
