Caring through fitness

DUNKELD WEST – Studio Kairos cares for the less fortunate.

Studio Kairos is a Nia studio, a dance and fitness class that not only engages the body, but the mind, emotions and one’s spirit. Studio Kairos is based at the Dunkeld Bowls Club in Johannesburg.

It arranges Nia public holiday jams classes to raise money for the less fortunate. The studio has supported the Home of Hope, an award-winning initiative which leads the way in the fight against trafficking, gender-based violence, and sexual exploitation, for many years.

The studio’s proceeds from these public holiday Nia classes on Mandela Day and Youth Day go to the girls at Home of Hope. This has helped the home to buy much-needed computer equipment for their homeschooling. Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, the young girls at the home have joined the Nia classes on Zoom.

The Home of Hope for Girls offers a safe residence to children and teens who have survived abusive situations, predominantly linked to child sex trafficking. Founder Khanyisile Motsa, ‘Mam Khanyi’, has undergone extensive training in trauma counselling, the prevention of child trafficking, and courses with reputable international organisations. This includes the International Programme on the Elimination of Child Labour and Global Fund for Children. Equipped with knowledge and hands-on experience, the staff work to restore the safety, dignity, and opportunity of the women and girls who have survived abuse.

Sibongiseni Sibanda from the Home of Hope received a scholarship from Nia HQ in Portland, Oregon to do her White Belt training in 2019. She retook the training in May 2021 with Rachel Jones, a volunteer coordinator at the Home of Hope. Rachel has offered her time there for many years. Sibanda will soon be offering Nia classes to her friends at the Home of Hope.
