Bramley police warn residents about fake cops demanding payment

BRAMLEY – "The message is clear: No money or payment is involved when the police deal with your case,” said Mogodi.

Bramley police warn community members that no money or payment is involved when police deal with cases.

A spokesperson for the Bramley Police Station Captain Molefe Mogodi said, “It has come to the attention of Bramley police that some people in the community become victims of crimes committed by thieves who pretend to be police officers.”

Mogodi said police are investigating a case where a victim received a call, allegedly by an unknown person, who at the time introduced himself as a police official.

“He allegedly informed the victim that he has a warrant for his arrest and he is coming for him, unless he is paid a certain amount of money which was mentioned by the imposter,” said Mogodi.

He explained that the victim paid the undisclosed amount of money to the conman.

Mogodi calls on residents to verify every call, piece of information or visit by someone who claims to be from the police.

“The message is clear: No money or payment is involved when the police deal with your case.”

Whether you are a complainant, victim or suspect, the process of investigation is the same.

“There is no exchange of money or any kind of payment.”

Mogodi said the people who commit these offences not only harass the community but also tarnish the integrity of the police.

Mogodi explained that when a case has been opened at the police station and the complainant has provided their cellphone number in their statement, they will receive two messages in the form of an SMS. The first will notify the complainant about their case number and the second will notify them of the detective handling the case.

“In a normal situation, the investigating officer will call or visit you to confirm that he or she is handling your case. The investigation officer will be the only officer from then onwards whom you will communicate with until the matter is finalised.”

Mogodi encouraged residents to share any crime-related information with police on 011 445 4113.
