Follow the correct procedure when reporting complaints against SAPS

PARKVIEW – Sibeko said that complaints can be reported at the nearest police station.

Station Commander of the Parkview Police Station Colonel Theledi Gopane encourages community members to follow the correct procedure when reporting complaints against the South African Police Service.

Spokesperson for the station Captain Tintswalo Sibeko said that this follows community members expressing concern over the behaviour of certain SAPS members on the I Love Parkhurst Facebook page on 7 May.

Sibeko said that station management together with the Parkview Community Policing Forum (CPF) met and agreed that the station should issue guidelines to the community to explain how to report complaints.

Complaints can be reported at the nearest police station.

She added, “Complaints can vary from torture/and or cruel, inhumane and/or degrading treatment, and/or punishment, committed by law enforcement members including poor service delivery.”

This relates to the following:

  • Police response to crimes
  • Complaints against the SAPS management or members
  • Poor investigation
  • Police negligence
  • Police misconduct/ corruption/ brutality
  • Police communication/ feedback.

Sibeko said that any dissatisfaction, disappointment or misconduct will be investigated to ensure that it is redressed.

“If need be, the necessary disciplinary steps will be taken against SAPS employees should it be found that they were negligent or unprofessional in their conduct, or the service they rendered or did not render.”

Any person, including a minor, who is dissatisfied with the conduct, or lack thereof, has the right to lodge a complaint.

When members of the public report a complaint, the complaint will be required to include detailed information including full names and surname, identity number, residential/business address, telephone and cell phone numbers and email address.

Complainants will need to give a detailed description of what occurred during the incident, including the province/area in which the complaint originates, as well as the date and time of the incident and details of the SAPS officials involved.

Sibeko said that all service delivery complaints will be registered and referred to the relevant business unit responsible for investigating it.

Complaints may be reported to Parkview SAPS complaints coordinator Captain Constance Oliphant on SefaraMR@saps.gov.za or mudaum2@saps.gov.za or Parkview Station Commander Colonel Theledi Gopane on GopaneTZ@saps.gov.za or Parkview CPF chairperson Geraldine Connell on Chair@parkviewCPF.co.za
