Williams reinstated as Principal at Parktown Boys

The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) has expressed their disappointment regarding this decision.

The Education Labour Relations Council (ELRC) has decided to reinstate Malcolm Williams to his former position as Principal of Parktown Boys’ High School.

The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) has expressed their disappointment regarding this decision.

The GDE dismissed Williams in December last year for his role in the events that led to the death of Grade 8 learner Enock Mpianzi at a Grade 8 Orientation Camp at Nyathi Bush and River Break in Brits. The camp was not authorised to take place by the GDE.

A subsequent investigation into the death of Enock by Harris, Nupen and Molebatsi Attorneys led to Williams being charged on three counts of misconduct, two of which were upheld following the disciplinary proceedings.

The charges included allowing the trip to take place without the GDE’s approval and Williams’ failure to ensure that a correct roll call was taken on the day of the incident.

In its arbitration between the GDE and Williams, the ELRC ordered that Williams be reinstated to his post on the same terms and conditions as before his dismissal.

Williams is expected to return to his official duties on 1 July.

The ELRC has further ordered that Williams be remunerated for the six months that he has not been working.

The GDE said that while it was disappointed with the outcome of the ELRC processes, they will study this decision and seek legal counsel on the matter.

Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi said, β€œWe are not fully happy about the outcome of the case but also realise that this matter has been dragging for too long; negatively affecting all who are affected. In that light, we will look for advice from the experts with a view to finding a last resolution to the matter.”
