JCPZ urges locals to play their part this World Environment Day

JOBURG – MMC for Community Development Margaret Arnolds said, “As we prepare to mark World Environment Day 2021, let us remember the future benefits of our actions as we plant our seeds now for a better tomorrow."

Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo (JCPZ) encourages community members to be part of saving our planet this World Environment Day on 5 June.

MMC for Community Development Margaret Arnolds said, “In a time when nations are grappling with the Covid pandemic, the onus lies on each individual to take active responsibility in restoring our planet. This year should be no different.”

Arnolds and JCPZ urge residents to play their part in making the City green and liveable for generations to come.

The United Nations has declared this the ‘Decade of Ecosystem Restoration’, meaning that there is less than a decade to restore the ongoing degradation of our environment and ecosystem by 2030.

Arnolds said that World Environment Day on 5 June is the starting point for individuals, environmental organisations, corporates, governments and people from all walks of life to join forces with the global movement to make a tangible difference in reversing the adverse effects and atrocities caused by climate change.

“The stark reality is that we don’t have much time, but if we start now, we can restore the earth to splendour.”

Locals are encouraged to join the #GenerationRestoration movement by getting involved in the following ways:

  • Under the supervision and strict Covid-19 regulations, plan a clean-up in a park, public open space, lake, stream or riverbank
  • Remove illegal dumping and litter
  • Plant indigenous trees since they offset carbon monoxide, harmful pollutants and assist with pollination
  • Start your own vegetable or herb garden. Dispose organic waste in your garden and use as compost
  • Plant fruit trees
  • Reduce, reuse, and recycle at home
  • Use energy sparingly, for example, solar heating, energy-saving lights, save water, walk to the nearby grocery store instead of driving
  • Initiate discussions, engagements and fun activities with neighbours, friends and family while visiting a local park.

“As we prepare to mark World Environment Day 2021, let us remember the future benefits of our actions as we plant our seeds now for a better tomorrow,” concluded Arnolds.
