Some much-needed rejuvenation for frontline workers

MELROSE – The gesture of support was demonstrated in a unique partnership with the University of Witwatersrand's Department of Anaesthesia.

Tangible support was rendered to frontline workers in Johannesburg through a successful partnership. James and Ethel Gray Park Foundation chairperson Sunil Geness conveyed that the gesture was illustrated on 26 May through a partnership with the University of Witwatersrand’s Department of Anaesthesia.

“The JEGPF recently learnt, that like most healthcare workers, the Wits anaesthesia department has been stretched under current working conditions against the backdrop of Covid-19. In addition, the recent fire at the Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital and the tragic death of a colleague had caused a general feeling of sadness to prevail in the department. This led to the initiation of a wellness picnic in the park event,” Geness shared.

Doctor Thenjiwe Hlongwana-Gukuta, a senior specialist anaesthesiologist at Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital, who heads up the wellness committee, said, “The James and Ethel Gray Park Foundation has proven to be a professional and excellent partner to host the wellness picnic for the department in the park.”

She added that the various improvements established in the park provided a unique differentiator to convene Johannesburg’s specialist anaesthesiologists collectively away from the various hospitals.

Dr Hlongwana-Gukuta thanked the foundation and Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo (JCPZ) for enabling the team to benefit from a much-needed rejuvenating and serene experience. She concluded, “[The residents of Johannesburg are] truly privileged and blessed to have a volunteer, non-profit organisation like the JEGPF initiate world-class improvements in the park, in partnership with JCPZ.”
