Should sanitary products be free?

CRAIGHALL PARK – Residents share opinions on whether sanitary products should be free or not?

Period poverty refers to the lack of access to sanitary products and hygiene facilities to manage menstruation.
This remains a crisis for many women in South Africa.

SAJITHA SINGH: I am appalled by the fact that women and especially girls in school are faced with the challenge of having to purchase these items rather than them being free of charge. Items such as condoms are made available free of charge for all, whereas sanitary products that women need every month are not.
ZITHULELE MKWEBANE: Yes I do think so mostly because girls don’t choose to go on their periods, it is something that happens naturally and some people can’t afford to buy menstrual products and it is not their fault.

The government scrapped the 15 per cent VAT on menstrual products in 2019 which helped to make them more accessible and affordable but there are still many in South Africa that still cannot afford to purchase sanitary products.

LETHU MEHLOMAKHULU: I definitely think so, if condoms are free then surely pads and tampons can be made free for all as well.

World Menstrual Hygiene Day is observed on 28 May and Rosebank Killarney Gazette asked residents if they thought menstrual products should be made free for women.
