City reminds residents to be water savvy

JOHANNESBURG – Water restrictions remain in place to prevent a water crisis.

The former MMC for Environment, Infrastructure, and Service Delivery, Nico De Jager is reminding all Johannesburg residents that Level 1 water restrictions in the municipality are still in place.

The restrictions were put in place after Rand Water indicated that their distribution network is currently under severe pressure whereby the water demand consistently exceeds the water supply. The water entity requested Johannesburg Water to implement their water restrictions to prevent a situation where both supply systems collapse and Johannesburg Water has responded by restricting many of its reservoirs by between 20 – 45 percent.

In an effort to maintain a culture of water conservation, Level 1 water restrictions are implemented according to Section 44 (3) of the Water Services By-law:

  • On an annual basis, between 6am– 6pm during 1 September and 31 March; and between 8am–2pm during 1 April and 31 August, all consumers are prohibited from watering and irrigating their gardens;
  • All consumers are prohibited from using a hosepipe to clean paved areas and driveways with municipal water.

The City of Joburg is again urging all customers to continue to use water sparingly as the rain-starved winter months approach.

Residents are reminded to conserve water by practising the following water-saving tips:

  • Do not leave taps dripping
  • Wash your car on the grass, this will water your lawn at the same time
  • Use a watering can instead of a hosepipe
  • Shorten your showering timeUse a glass of water to rinse when brushing your teeth
  • Take shallow baths. Avoid filling your bath to a depth greater than 100mm
  • Re-use water to water your garden or pot plants.

Residents are also advised to continue to report all burst pipes, leaking water meters, and open hydrants to 011 375 5555;
