PARKHURST – The suspect will appear in the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court on 14 May to answer to charges of house robbery and attempted murder.

Parkview police arrested a 34-year-old suspect for house robbery and attempted murder in Parkhurst on 12 May.

The spokesperson for the Parkview Police Station Captain Tintswalo Sibeko said on 12 May at about 7.30pm, a complainant alleged that he was with his family in the dining room preparing to have supper when they heard glass breaking in the bedroom.

“They rushed to the bedroom where they saw a man breaking the window with a brick and jumping into the house,” said Sibeko.

She added that the suspect allegedly started hitting the complainant, a 75-year-old man, with the brick on the head and right hand.

The suspect allegedly demanded cell phones, jewellery and a laptop from the complainant. The complainant’s daughter gave the suspect all the items.

Sibeko said the suspect fled the scene on foot.

The victim’s neighbour contacted Cortac Security which immediately contacted the Parkview police.

“On their arrival at the scene of the crime, the police found the suspect on the neighbour’s roof and he was apprehended.”

The elderly man sustained injuries and was rushed to hospital.

Sibeko said all the stolen items were recovered.

The family will receive trauma counselling from the Parkview Victim Support Unit.

“The suspect will appear in the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court on 14 May to answer to charges of house robbery and attempted murder.”

Parkview Station Commander Colonel Theledi Gopane commended Parkview Crime Prevention members for their swift response and also extended his gratitude to Cortac Security and the community of Parkhurst for working with police.
