Primary school learners at the Deutsche Internationale Schule Johannesburg (DSJ), situated in Parktown, enjoyed a different school gala on 18 March.
Primary school deputy principal Lisa Vosters said that the usual gala event was unique as a result of Covid-19 precautions. “The children were blessed with good weather and swam various fun relays, individual medleys and individual stroke races,” said Vosters.
She explained that the lockdown and poor weather at the start of 2021 meant that a lot of training time was lost. “Our learners were able to swim the races they felt comfortable with and with fewer children in a race at a time, this allowed us to be spread out.”
She said that Grade 1 learners also joined for a short while to show off their swimming skills.
“We missed our parents or spectators that we are used to, but with more space, our children could be spread out allowing some healthy exercise and good swimming rays to end our school term,” concluded Vosters.
