Parktown Girls’ debaters perform well at SA National Schools Debating Championships

PARKVIEW – Ammaarah Cachalia was selected for the South African A Debating Squad while Christina Vaudran and Tiger-Anne Cupido were selected for the South African A Junior Debating Squad.

Five Parktown girls performed well both individually and within teams at the South African National Schools Debating Championships over the festive season.

The girls competed as part of the Gauteng delegation captained by Ammaarah Cachalia.

As a province, Gauteng had a clean sweep winning three out of four finals with many top-ranking speakers.

In the junior team, Christina Vaudran’s team ranked fourth and as an individual Christina ranked ninth. Tiger-Anne Cupido’s team ranked second and as an individual, Tiger-Anne ranked second. Both Christina and Tiger-Anne were selected for the South African Junior Team Trials which took place in early February. Following the trials, both Christina and Tiger-Anne were selected for the South African A Junior Debating Squad.

In the senior division, Michaela Smith’s team ranked 16th, Ammaarah’s team ranked 13th and Aaliyah Cassim’s team ranked second. As an individual, Ammaarah ranked third and was selected for the South African Senior Team Trials, which took place in January where she was selected for the South African A Debating Squad.

Captain of debating at Parktown Girls’ Ammaarah said, “A special thanks must go to our coach Bella Mkhabela, for her constant love and support throughout nationals. We could not have done it without her! We are exceptionally proud of every single debater, not just for their achievements, but also for the hard work and commitment they continue to display.”
