Community galvanised into action

SANDRINGHAM – Various community stakeholders gave their time and skills to refurbish the school premises.

Active citizenry was showcased in true form as the various stakeholders banded together to conduct a clean-up of the Sandringham High School premises. The move was in line with the initiative to take the school to its former glory as well as revive sports within the area as published in the Rosebank Killarney Gazette article School sports has revival [Week ending 5 February].

A number of volunteers heeded the call to come and clean-up, cut grass as well as paint the school premises in preparation for the extra-curricular activities planned ahead.

Chairman of the Institute for Skills Empowerment (ISE) Morake Mokgosi said people from different avenues within Region E had come together in action. “Our motto is ‘we are champions together’ therefore community partnership is very important. The other day, the councillor said Region E is the financial hub of the City so if we can tap into that as far as partnerships are concerned, then we can achieve a lot.”

Mokgosi added that it’s not only the parents with children who go to Sandringham High but adults, business people as well as private schools in the area that may come on board as well.

“We have started and there’s a lot that needs to be done. We need to garner resources on a regular basis. We are doing this for the current generation as well as future generations.”

Ward 72 councillor Lionel Greenberg said he was impressed with the initiative as schoolchildren were participating and being taught accountability. He added that he would contact the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) and ask them to tend to the paving at the entrance of the school.

Sandringham High School principal Anand Brijnath said the initiative had not only mobilised volunteers and learners but also teachers and the school governing body (SGB) into challenging each other to participate. “So far four classes have been painted by teachers themselves. The bottom classrooms and pavements were done by a group of Grade 10 and 11 boys who came on their own and offered to help. So, I am hoping that will inspire other boys and girls.”
