With a lot of time on their hands, local matriculants decided to put it to good use

CRAIGHALL PARK – Looking for jobs to gain experience and earn some money is what these 2020 matriculants have done with their time.

For matriculants awaiting their results, the waiting game might be a source of restlessness and anxiety.

For Craighall residents and 2020 matriculants Ziya Devar and Liam Drake, that is not the case. The two close friends decided to try their luck at finding some work before university starts.

Ziya said, “It was much more difficult than we expected. We approached multiple restaurants with our CVs and heard back from none of them. So we decided to take matters into our own hands and provide services [such as painting and gardening] that are in demand within our community.”

He added that with the matric results only being released in February, they’ve had a lot of time on their hands and that made their schedule quite flexible.

“However, we’ve found that having a plan for each day helps enormously. With the nature of our services, it requires a lot of willpower and determination to work the entire day but I believe that hard work is the cornerstone of success. You just have to keep your head down and graft.

“My advice to any other matriculants looking to make money is to go out and find needs within your community and find a way to satisfy them. It won’t be easy but few things in life are.”

Drake said he was currently not enrolled at a tertiary institution due to the matric results not being released, so he had been able to focus on acquiring a job without the stress of university.

He added, “Currently, the service demand is not too high and I am sitting on only three jobs. I will plan my day out according to when customers would like me to work. For example, I will be painting a house in the morning, and later that afternoon I will do gardening for my neighbour.

“These are tough, physically tiring jobs but the goal is to get experience and make a little bit of money.”
