An ongoing issue of the bad state of Fairmount Sports Facility was recently addressed by the JPC

FAIRMOUNT – Majova said JPC was currently in the process of repurposing the sports facility in its entirety.

Johannesburg Property Company (JPC) has responded to the issues raised regarding the Fairmount sports grounds.

In the article, Soccer field is in ruins [Week ending 22 January 2021], residents’ concerns were highlighted with regard to the grounds.

The ward councillor, police and members of the Save Fairmount Group Initiative had all attended a meeting at the site to discuss the state of the facility and the possible solutions to address the issues.

Acting CEO at JPC Asanda Majova said the Fairmount sports grounds comprised tennis courts, soccer fields and bowling greens. “There is currently no lease in place for the tennis courts and soccer fields. However, the bowling greens were leased to the Fairmount Bowls Club. The club will continue to occupy this portion of the property until such time that the facility is advertised by means of public tender,” she said.

Majova added that the issues raised were mainly associated with the soccer fields and tennis courts. These included noise pollution from soccer matches, overgrown grass, leaking taps and the existence of illegal occupants on the property. Majova said the issues have been attended to timeously pending the eviction of the illegal occupants.

“To date, JPC Property Management is yet to receive any complaints from the community, except from the ward councillor in relation to drug abuse at the facility.

“Until such time that the property is leased, repairs and maintenance on the facility is ongoing. This involves general cleaning, repairing the perimeter fencing, grass cutting and tree felling. Nonetheless, JPC Property Management has arranged for a clean-up operation of the property to take place on a monthly basis [together] with the Norwood Pikitup depot.”

She added that the details of the monthly clean-up had been communicated to the community.
Majova said JPC was currently in the process of repurposing the sports facility in its entirety. The repurposing process will be conducted in line with the Urban Study which would be conducted by an independent urban designer. It is anticipated that this study would be completed by March 2021. Thereafter, the facility would be advertised by means of a public tender based on the outcomes of the study.
