Memories and stories of local history shared

PARKTOWN – One such artwork narrative will be showcased in the latest virtual tour by the JHF.

The Johannesburg Heritage Foundation (JHF) will be sharing some local history through art this weekend. The virtual tour which consists of artwork titled Noordgesig with a Pinch of Salt and Pepper #Kasie Style! will take place on 6 February at 2pm for 2.15pm.

“Depicted in glorious colours reflecting the new energy, community artists have almost erased the bleakness of their apartheid past, celebrating the personalities and achievements which defied anonymity. Forced removals in the ’50s created Noordgesig, removing people from homes close to the city centre out beyond the mine dumps and across the valley from Orlando East.

“When The Trinity Session, curators and coordinators of #ArtMyJozi ran workshops in the community they brought the residents together to remember an almost forgotten past. Memories and stories were shared through oral histories, interviews and artwork narratives programme,” Flo Bird, deputy chairperson at JHF described.

She added, “Our guide Lavinia Williams-Otto is one of those artists and herself a resident who has discovered her talent through the inspiration of local history. Lavinia will be assisted by her husband Fabian, who also joined the guide course provided by the JHF. He is a crazy Manchester United fan, so lapses into football when his team wins connecting to the community’s love for soccer.”

Bird said these tours are open to all and space may be limited. There is a nominal fee of R60 for fully paid-up members of the JHF, Forest Town, Houghton, Kensington, Norwood, Oaklands, Parktown, Parkview and Westcliff associations.

Participants need to register with Eira Bond on mail@joburgheritage.co.za

Non-members to pay R100 by EFT into The JHF account and participants may use their surname and ‘VTNG’ as the reference. Those who have registered and paid will receive the link on 5 February. Those who want to join and still need to pay their membership fee may email Bond.
