Care for those who care for others

PARKTOWN – The frontline workers were shown appreciation for their resilience during the pandemic that is still present.

A token of appreciation to the frontline workers at Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital (CMJAH) was well received. Under the #CaxtonCares banner, the Rosebank Killarney Gazette team donated care packages to healthcare workers in the Covid-19 ward at the hospital.

Communication and public relations manager at the hospital, Lungiswa Mvumvu, said they have about eight to 10 wards that are dedicated to Covid-19 patients. “The wards are divided so that we have patients who are under investigations, we call them (PUIs) and those who are confirmed Covid-19 patients who are in the red zones. We also have an intensive care unit that specifically looks after the Covid-19 patients.”

Operational manager at the Covid-19 ICU ward, Clement Ngcobo added the ICU was refurbished from being a ward to specifically cater for Covid-19 critically ill patients. “It’s a 27-bedded ICU but we have never actually reached 27. So, since the first wave of Covid-19 we’ve been nursing patients of a maximum of 13 every day. With the second wave we’ve seen a rise in numbers and we’re therefore still catering for them.”

He added that numbers of infections were currently going down but they were admitting more patients.

He said that until their last patient walks out of ward, they would breathe a sigh of relief but they would keep busy in the meantime. “That’s why this gift will go a long way in uplifting the morale of the staff, especially the pens because we depend on donations. Staff will never use their pens because everything that is inside there has to stay in there,” Ngcobo said.

Mvumvu added that their clinical teams would also go into the wards to assist; for instance, surgical teams would go in when they’re not busy and with the ban of alcohol their trauma units had been very quiet.

“On behalf of Charlotte Maxeke, we’re really grateful to the Caxton’s Rosebank Killarney Gazette for doing this for our nurses who have been soldiering on for almost a year. They’ve been standing and they’re the first line of defence for all the Covid-19 patients. We are doing everything in our power to make sure that the patients who are admitted here get the best care possible. Thank you very much for strengthening us during this time of the pandemic,” Mvumvu concluded.
