Sanzaf donates 200 food vouchers to victims of abuse

PARKTOWN – The Teddy Bear Foundation is thankful to the South African National Zakah Fund (Sanzaf) for the donation of 200 vouchers for persons in need connected to the foundation.

A number of victims of abuse connected to the Teddy Bear Foundation (TBF) will now breathe a sigh of relief when they receive R400 Shoprite vouchers.

TBF is thankful to the South African National Zakah Fund (Sanzaf) for the donation of 200 vouchers for persons in need connected to the foundation.

The office manager at Sanzaf, Javed Hoosen said the fund had so far assisted community members with 5 000 food vouchers since October last year. “The vouchers give people a sense of dignity and autonomy. We wanted to assist children being abused and realised that there is no better partner.

“We would like to see other community members and businesses match or better this donation. This is just the start of what is needed.”

Director of TBF, Dr Shaheda Omar said since the start of lockdown last year, she had seen an increase in gender-based violence, many families suffering and women and children deprived of food.

While the work of the foundation does not explicitly involve relief, Omar said it was impossible to give therapy to children who have empty stomachs.

“It has been a huge challenge over the past few months as we receive excessive requests for food and other supplies.”

The foundation has partnered with community members to deliver food parcels to families in need since the start of lockdown but expressed that the need was endless, particularly with the delayed opening of schools.

“We are so thankful to Sanzaf for seeking us out and looking to uplift and empower the community.”

Local residents who would like to contribute vouchers or food parcels are encouraged to contact Dalene Bishop of TBF at daleneb@ttbc.org.za. Items to purchase for the food hampers include 375ml cooking oil, 2.5kg maize meal, 500g pasta, 2kg rice, tinned fish, baked beans, soup packets, small packets of samp and soya mince, tea, coffee sugar and long-life milk.
