Deutsche International Schule reflects on 2021

PARKTOWN – 2021 provided DSJ with many smaller problems as various waves came and went through the year.

After a year of many setbacks due to Covid-19 and lockdowns, Deutsche Internationale Schule Johannesburg (DSJ) entered the new academic year of 2021 prepared to face any hurdles that may arise.

Markus Holtmann, DSJ prefect of the Class of 2021 said, “Most of the school year fell into the category of ‘new normal’, with only two brief periods of online learning in January and July due to high Covid-19 infections.”

“With our 2020 online experiences, the transition between in-person and online learning was relatively seamless. While many of the larger school events did not happen this year, we managed to celebrate our valediction with teachers and parents, as well as our informal valediction.”

Holtmann said the school’s biggest highlight of the year was how the school’s teachers went above and beyond their duties to ensure the learners received a good education despite the pandemic.

“I would like to thank all our DSJ teachers as well as our parents for their support in getting us through the last two years,” Holtmann said.

A majority of the school’s events were cancelled, but they were able to run a successful Open Day, and their annual Fashion Show and a parent-driven Family Day in November.

DSJ principal Thomas Bachmeier said, “As a forward-thinking institution, we are proud to be a part of an institution that promotes innovation and adaptability. I would like to wish all members of the DSJ school community a Merry Christmas and Happy Festive Season, and I am grateful for your support of our amazing institution.

“As a final note, I wish all readers a wonderful Christmas and the best wishes for 2022.”
