Huggett said 2020 was a year she has witnessed the best in people

NORWOOD – Huggett says 2020 has also been a year where she has witnessed the best in people.

Ward 73 councillor Eleanor Huggett dedicated her year-end message to her friend and mentor Marion Laserson who passed away earlier last year.

“2020 has been an interesting and challenging year for everyone. The greatest challenge being that of dealing with Covid-19 issues. Many businesses in Ward 73 closed down, many people lost their source of income and many got ill,” said Huggett.

She commended the work of the CPF who started a food parcel programme which was later handed over to community network Noah Can. The initiative was strongly supported by businesses, residents and the Lower Houghton Residents Association.

“A further huge challenge has been one of service delivery. I wish to thank all officials who, with limited, run down, outdated resources, have done everything they can to assist residents.”

She added that there was still a backlog with residents not receiving the services they deserved.

“I wish to thank all the residents’ associations and residents for filling this gap by stepping up and adopting parks, cleaning the street and organising fundraisers. It is they who are maintaining the suburbs.”

Huggett highlighted the loss of Laserson who died at the age of 83 of Covid-19 and had worked tirelessly for Ward 73 and surrounding wards, giving of her time voluntarily. Laserson also reported all the building control issues, fighting for residents and keeping a watchful eye on the whole area.

Huggett thanked the Steering Committee of the Paterson Park Recreation Centre, highlighting that the centre would hopefully be fully operational by June 2021.

She hoped the Reya Vaya and upgrade of Louis Botha Avenue would be completed in 2021, since it had been an ongoing inconvenience for many residents.

She also thanked the Norwood CPF, polices, Lifeline and the Neighbourhood Watch for their efforts to protect residents and reinstate law and order.

“It has been a sad, hard year with friends and family members lost and I wish to extend my condolences to all families affected by this pandemic.”

“It has also been a year where we have witnessed the best in people. I wish to thank all the residents’ associations, residents, Noah Can and City officials for their support through the year and look forward to a successful and healthy 2021.”
