Watch: Community members come to a crime-victim’s rescue

PARKHURST – Reports from the Parkview police have confirmed that the suspect was apprehended with the help of community members.

Parkview police arrested a 35-year-old man on 2 December for common robbery and assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH).

Spokesperson Captain Tintswalo Sibeko reported that the complainant was walking to work along Parkhurst Road when a man grabbed the victim from behind and pushed her down onto the ground, assaulting her and taking her handbag. “The suspect ran away but community [members] of Parkhurst heard when the victim was shouting for help. The community managed to apprehend the suspect and Parkview police were summoned to the scene of the crime. The suspect was arrested and a case of common robbery and assault GBH was opened,” said Sibeko.

 

The victim’s handbag was returned to her. She did sustain injuries and is currently seeking medical attention. Parkview Victim support was on the scene to provide counseling. 

She added that the suspect was remanded in custody in the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court. The suspect appeared in court on 4 December and the case was postponed to 11 December for further investigation.
