Bee artwork educates children and adults alike

PARKVIEW – Bee artwork educates children and adults alike.

Motorists driving down Wicklow Avenue in Parkview will notice a thought-provoking bee artwork outside Parkview Pre-Primary School.

Head of operations at the school, Debbie Brown said the artwork was produced as a collaboration between children and staff at the school.

Brown quoted Albert Einstein explaining that the artwork represented the burden the bee carried for our survival. “Einstein said, ‘If the bee disappears from the surface of the earth, man would have no more than four hours to live.”

The school started by making a papier-mâché world using strips of waste paper glued onto the mesh to hold the shape. The children then helped to paint the background, the detail on the earth and made pom-poms for the bee’s body by wrapping wool around their hands – all of which are essential in the development of fine motor skills.

Brown said Wicklow Avenue was the ideal place for the school to share their environmental projects with the community.

“We all get to enjoy the beautiful artwork while at the same time think more about how we can work together to save our bees. We hope that this artwork initiates some thought-provoking discussions for adults and children alike.”

She said the artwork helped teach children the importance of bees and the devastating threat they face.

Brown explained that it was important for children to explore, create and discover in an exciting, interactive and fun way. The school used an annual concert entitled ‘Beauty and the Bees’ to educate learners in this regard.

“At Parkview Pre-Primary School, we believe that by creating an awareness of the world around us and by instilling love and respect for the environment, there is hope for a better, brighter future.”
