St Teresa’s community grows in giving

This initiative encourages the girls to dare their teachers to do something.

After a visit to Australia, four Mercy schools ambassadors from St Teresa’s High School in Rosebank brought back many exciting ideas.

One of those ideas was the Dare to Donate Initiative. According to St Teresa’s computer educator and marketing manager, Lianda May, in 2019, Alethea Vivier, Robyn Shearer, Jasmin Fraser and Brogan Hughes from St Teresa’s High visited Our Lady of Mercy College (another Mercy school) in Australia as part of the school’s Ambassadors Programme. “On returning, they decided to implement the Dare to Donate Initiative. This initiative encourages the girls to dare their teachers to do something.
“Mrs Claire Leonardi was dared to spray her hair multiple colours and Miss Clare Wright was dared to dress like a man for the day. Mrs Laura Spencer was dared to do a ballet performance and Mrs Olwyn Rheeder was dared to perform a Shakespearean monologue. When the teacher accepts the dare, they put a price on it and then girls then put coins in a jar every morning in order to get to the price,” May explained.

She added that all the proceeds from the Dare to Donate Initiative went to buy wool which the girls used to knitted squares throughout the year to make blankets for their Mercy projects. The blankets were then donated on Mercy Day which was held in September.
