During the early hours of Sunday morning, 11 October, members of the JMPD Undercover Unit (IIOC) arrested a former police officer for allegedly impersonating a police officer.
According to a statement by Metro police spokesperson Xolani Fihla, the JMPD Undercover Unit (IIOC) were patrolling along Eloff Street when they stopped a white VW Jetta fitted with a dashboard and rear windscreen police lights.
“Upon inspecting the vehicle, officers noticed that the driver was wearing a SAPS uniform and requested to search the vehicle. Officers found a SAPS badge, name tag, bulletproof vest and a face mask inside the vehicle,” explained Fihla.
Fihla also said that the driver handed over his police pocketbook and told the officers that he is a SAPS employee and holds a rank of a Captain.
“Officers decided to inquire with the SAPS Reaction channel using the driver’s personal number. The SAPS control room dispatcher informed officers that the personal number belongs to a Captain that had resigned as a police official in 2015,” added Fihla.
Fihla said that the suspect was arrested and detained at Johannesburg Central SAPS for impersonating a police officer. “He will likely appear in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court today, 12 October.”
