Alleged rape incident involving mental health patients at Charlotte Maxeke

PARKTOWN – The Gauteng Department of Health says they are conducting an internal investigation into an alleged rape incident that took place at the hospital on 27 September.

The Gauteng Department of Health has announced that they will be conducting an internal investigation into an alleged rape incident that took place at Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital.

According to the statement by the Department of Health, “The CMJAH incident happened on Saturday, 27 September 2020 and involves two mental healthcare users, a 15-year-old male and the alleged perpetrator who is a 22-year-old male.”

The department said that the incident has been reported to police for further investigation. “Counselling has been arranged for the affected patients,” said the statement.

DA Shadow Health MEC Jack Bloom said, “These incidents raise questions yet again about the adequacy of security at Gauteng public health facilities, especially for mental health patients.  “It is inexcusable that hospital security contracts that were irregularly awarded in 2014 for a two-year period have been extended month-by-month for four years at costs for more than R25 billion. “New security contracts need to be awarded as soon as possible to competent security companies that better protect patients and staff from all forms of violence at our public hospitals.”
