Learners at Pridwin Preparatory School in Melrose celebrated the diversity of their heritage at school on 23 September.
Executive headmaster Patrick Lees said, “Diversity is not about variety, it recognises an integrated and consistent sense of individuality within contexts of variety. It is not, in other words, about ‘same-ness’, but about coherence within difference that integrates people without contradictions.”
Boys arrived at school dressed in clothes representing their heritage. The school held a heritage assembly on the field where boys described their heritage and its importance. The school then held a braai for the boys before they went home for the long weekend. Lees quoted Nelson Mandela saying, ‘We must have the profound sense that we are human only through the humanity of others; that if we are to accomplish anything in the world, it will in equal measure be due to the work and achievement of others’.
