ALERT: Severe thunderstorms to hit Gauteng on 30 September
JOBURG – The thunderstorm formations are expected to start in the early afternoon and reach their maximum intensity around 5pm.
The City of Johannesburg Disaster Management Centre (CoJDMC) warns the public to note the severe thunderstorms that are expected to hit Gauteng on 30 September from between 10am and 9pm.

This follows after the South African Weather Service’s (Saws) National Forecasting Centre issued a Level 2 impact-based warning for the potential of severe thunderstorms over parts of the City.
⚠️YELLOW THUNDERSTORM alert issued for:
1. Gauteng
2. Western Bushveld of Limpopo
3. Western Highveld of MpumalangaFrom Wednesday (30 Sep) ➡️ late afternoon ➡️ overnight.

It is predicted that the storm pockets will be associated with severe lighting, localised flash flooding, reduced driving visibility and or damaging winds. “This could result in damage to informal and or formal housing and business structures, temporary flooding of low road crossings, causeways and susceptible low lying residential area,” said Saws.
The CoJMDC urges residents of the City and its visitors to be observant of the changing weather conditions and to follow the below safety precautions:
- As far possible, remain indoors;
- Do not seek shelter under trees;
- Look out for signs of potential tree toppling;
- Avoid open and isolated spaces;
- Look out for and do not cross flooded low-lying bridges.
