The firearm amnesty period has been extended from 1 August this year and will end on 31 January 2021.
Parkview Police Station spokesperson Captain Tintswalo Sibeko shared that the six-month firearm period will afford South Africans an opportunity to surrender illegal/unwanted firearms, ammunition and /or firearm parts to help clear illegal guns from the streets.
This entails surrendering of illegal/unwanted firearms, firearm parts and/or ammunition, without fear of being prosecuted for unlawful possession.
Persons or institutions that meet the criteria below can apply for amnesty:
- Persons in possession of a firearm without a legitimate license, permit or authorisation.
- Persons in possession of a firearm part (slide, bolt or breech-block) without a licensed firearm capable of bearing that part.
- Persons in possession of ammunition without a licensed firearm capable of discharging the ammunition or without a collector’s permit.
- Persons in possession of illegally imported firearms.
- Persons who inherited firearms but failed to obtain a license, permit or authorisation for such firearms.
- Persons who have been declared unfit to possess a firearm, but failed to surrender their firearms and ammunition.
- Businesses (including private security businesses) with firearms and ammunition that ceased to carry on business and failed to dispose of the firearms and ammunition.
- Persons in possession of firearms which the firearm licence, permit or authorisation has been terminated in terms of the Firearms Control Act.
- Institutions which wish to surrender obsolete/redundant/discarded firearm.
- Persons who wish to voluntary surrender their legally possessed firearms and/or ammunition may do so at any time before, during and after the amnesty.
Sibeko added, “Parkview SAPS is appealing to the community to surrender illegal/unwanted firearms, firearm parts and /or ammunition, without fear of being prosecuted for the unlawful possession, to help create a safer South Africa for all.”
