Milpark nurse is recognised and celebrated as an essential worker

Sithole spoke to the Gazette about her journey to become a nurse and what kept her motivated, especially during this pandemic.

Netcare Milpark Hospital nurse Eagen Sithole is honoured to be recognised as a local hero amid the challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Sithole was approached by her modelling agency to become the face of the Assupol campaign recognising the sacrifices of healthcare workers. Over the past few weeks, she has featured on a TV advert and billboards across the country.

Sithole spoke to the Gazette about her journey to become a nurse and what kept her motivated, especially during this pandemic.”I fell pregnant at a young age and lost track of my life,” she said.

“Around the same time, my mother got sick and I would visit her in hospital. Every day, she would share stories about the wonderful nurses who showed her love and care. I decided that I should do the same thing.”

Following 17 years of service as a nurse, Sithole said she wouldn’t have it any other way.  “I enjoy looking after sick people, helping them feel better and putting a smile on their faces.”  Sithole added that she never expected to be working during a pandemic such as Covid-19.

“It’s not something we expected or prepared for during our training. It is a scary time for all healthcare workers. We fear for our lives because many have died across the world.”  Sithole said she felt honoured to represent the entire nursing community through the Assupol campaign.

“As nurses, we often don’t get acknowledged and appreciated. Being honoured in this way is such a blessing, not only for me but for the rest of the frontliners.”  Assupol head of brand and communications Velmah Nzembela said Sithole was identified as an example of one of the many essential workers who leaves their family to commute to work to help the country.

Sithole said, “The first day that I saw myself on the billboards, it was a huge surprise. I was shaking and crying tears of joy. This acknowledgment gives me the strength to face each day.  “My colleagues were very happy to see me on the billboards. They tease me each day and when they see me on TV, they scream from excitement.”

She added that she was thankful to God for keeping her safe during this time.”I pray and worship God each morning and I see God’s grace and mercy and believe he is protecting us.”

Sithole encouraged members of the public to adhere to government’s protocols, wear masks correctly, wash their hands and stay home.  She also urged healthcare workers not to stigmatise other staff who test positive for Covid-19, but instead support them wherever possible.
