Parkview RA and Parktown Girls serve the community

The Parkview Community Assistance Group volunteers (CAG), which is a PRA committee, along with four learners from Parktown High School for Girls who were doing community service, all met in the morning to pack the food parcels.

The Parkview residents have generously contributed towards feeding the hungry since the start of lockdown.

According to Parkview Residents Association (PRA) marketing and communication liaison Caryl Kelly, the association is running a food drive that has, on average, been feeding around 700 people every day. “This last Thursday (23 July) they met again to pack another 180 food parcels that feed four people for two weeks at a time,” Kelly said.

She added that the Parkview Community Assistance Group volunteers (CAG), which is a PRA committee, along with four learners from Parktown High School for Girls who were doing community service, all met on the morning to pack the food parcels. “The bulk of the parcels go to Brixton to be distributed by our ward councillor. These go to people residing in Ward 87. The rest are distributed closer to home, helping people in Parkview and surrounds,” said Kelly.

She said the four girls from Parktown Girls helping worked really well, with them being on holiday. Parktown learner Jemma Kelly said it really made her feel happy to know that she was helping someone in need and doing something for someone.

Amber Kelly said she enjoyed the opportunity to give back. “Lockdown has made me so aware of how many people are in need, and it felt really good to know that I was making even a small difference to their lives at this difficult time,” she added.

For Rachael Steven the inspiration behind giving her assistance at the food packing is the pure knowledge that by giving an hour of her time, someone else can be helped drastically. Mila Rossouw said, “Although this pandemic has had a huge impact on everyone, this community service has put a lot into perspective by shining a light on how privileged my family and I are. By packing food parcels I’ve realised that I can be extremely grateful for what I have during these crazy and scary times.”
