Learners encourage hope and courage at Parktown Girls

Parktown High School for Girls Public Speaking Club shared a message of hope through a video.

The teacher in charge of the club, Jen Lamberti, said the nine club members illustrated the message through a video that was based on an adaptation of Probably Tomfoolery’s poem The Great Realisation. The nine learners made their own video whereby they each took turns in reciting verses from the poem.

Kiwi-born Welsh YouTuber and poet, Tomos Roberts, also known as Probably Tomfoolery, produced a ‘post-pandemic bedtime tale’ video based on the poem. In the video, a father tells his sleepy son the story of The Great Realisation, about how the coronavirus caused everyone to rethink their priorities and make positive changes to their lives.

The poem, which takes the form of a fairy-tale, details the grim realities of pre-Covid life, such as pollution and over-consumption, before imagining a brighter future once the pandemic is over. The poet has shown the world a ray of sunshine through what seems like grey skies with his pandemic poem.

The girls in the club took inspiration from Roberts’s video and made their own to convey a message of hope. Lamberti highlighted that Yusra Munir and Vongai Mawoneke as the captain and vice-captain respectively as well as Chiddimma Nwokedi played a big role in the production.
