Norwood police make a breakthrough with a big arrest

Norwood police made a breakthrough as they arrested a suspect for robbery on 15 July.

According to Norwood spokesperson Sergeant Eric Masotsha, the robbery occurred on 14 February this year. He said a member of the public had been robbed of R180 000 in cash after withdrawing the large sum from a well-known bank in Killarney.

Masotsha said CCTV footage showed that the victim was followed from the bank until he was blocked by the suspects’ getaway vehicle at Athol Oaklands off-ramp heading towards Melrose Arch. “On 15 July at about 2pm, our pro-active detectives spotted that getaway vehicle with the same vehicle make and registration number along Houghton Drive. A chase then ensued till the driver lost control and hit a street pole then tried to jump out but it was too late,” added Masotsha.

The suspect’s accomplices are still at large. “Our police members are working tirelessly to get the other three outstanding culprits. The arrested suspect will appear before a court of law very soon charged with armed robbery.” He pleaded with members of the public to not inform bank staff members prior to them withdrawing large amounts. Matotsha explained that members of the public often did this in a bid to avoid delays at the bank.  “This is because we as the police can’t rule out any foul play in this committed offence. Always be vigilant if you are coming from the bank or airport. When you see anything that looks suspicious, please drive to a nearby police station or garage where we can be able to gather the information from garage footage. “To our loyal community, let’s work together in fighting crime and be patient with us while doing our investigations as your cases are very important to us.”
