Husband (32) arrested for his wife’s murder in Newtown

NEWTOWN – The spokesperson explained that a community member alerted the security guard after noticing blood on the suspect's clothes.

Police arrested a 32-year-old man for the murder of his wife at their home in Newtown.

According to Johannesburg Central Police Station’s spokesperson, Captain Xoli Mbele, the suspect was arrested at 9am on Sunday, 26 July. Mbele said the suspect allegedly stabbed his 42-year-old wife several times in the upper body. “Paramedics certified her dead on the scene. The knife that was used in the commission of the crime was recovered. The motive for the murder is not yet known,” said Mbele.

Mbele explained that the suspect had left the apartment he shared with his wife. “One of the community members saw him with blood on his clothes and alerted the security guard. The police were called and the suspect was apprehended when they discovered a gruesome murder scene.”

An investigation is under way and the suspect will appear soon at the Johannesburg Central Magistrate’s Court.

Mbele said the station commander, Brigadier Irvin Perumal condemned such a heinous crime against women. “He urged the women not to keep quiet when they are being abused by the partners. To men he also urged them to stop treating women as their property and seek counselling if they cannot solve their problems amicably,” added Mbele.
