Parkview CPF aims to boost SAPS immune supplies against Covid-19

The CPF executive committee sent out an urgent appeal for funding after hearing that nine Parkview Police Station staff members have tested positive for Covid-19 and one member had tragically passed away.

The Parkview Community Policing Forum (CPF) has sprung into action to rally support for police members from residents in the precinct.

According to Parkview CPF chairperson Geraldine Connell, the CPF executive committee sent out an urgent appeal for funding after hearing that nine Parkview Police Station staff members have tested positive for Covid-19 and one member had tragically passed away. Connell said, “The funds raised will be used exclusively to assist Parkview SAPS members and their families with Covid-19-related expenses and will be administered by the CPF. Thanks to the generosity of several pharmacies within and around the precinct, the cost of the critical immune-boosting vitamins and minerals has been drastically cut to make them affordable for the SAPS members. This means that R100 buys one month’s worth of vitamins C, D, B and zinc!”

She added that there are 120 staff members who work at the station. The CPF’s goal is to give each member three months’ supply of immune-boosting vitamins and minerals. “The community’s response to the SAPS Covid-19 Relief Drive has been amazing. Within two days of hearing about the need for vitamins, Birju Patel, owner of Lancaster Pharmacy in Craighall Park managed to source and package one month’s supply of vitamins for 40 people. These were handed to Colonel [Fatima] Gaffoor on Saturday by Debbi Burman, head of the Parkview precinct Victim Support Unit.”

She added that The Colony Pharmacy and Eastleigh Pharmacy have also committed to supplying the necessary immune-boosting supplements at low prices. The chairperson said people have also been extremely generous with their donations. To date, about R11 000 of monetary contributions has been received.

One resident who did not feel comfortable donating money, chose to donate R800 worth of vitamins instead.

Connell shared, “One resident explained her reservations about simply donating money to the CPF. She asked me for a list of which vitamins and minerals we were supplying. She then went to five different pharmacies, bought those products and dropped them off with us. What a proactive way to contribute!”

Anyone wishing to help those men and women in blue who assist us in our times of need, can make donations into the account provided on the Parkview CPF website and Facebook page.”

Parkview Police Station Commander Colonel Theledi Gopane said the officers involved in the project would be available for comment the following week.

Residents who would like to contribute can access account details on the Parkview Community Policing Forum website www.parkviewcpf.co.za or on their Facebook page.

Section 18A certificates will be issued on request by emailing secretary@parkviewcpf.co.za.
